Milestones Are Suggestions To Her

If you’ve ever raised a child, you know they have milestones to hit. The CDC has a list of milestones every infant, toddler, and child should hit and by what age is the typical “hit” of the milestone. The child’s pediatrician, at every checkup, will check in with the parents to make sure these milestones are being hit at the appropriate times per guidelines.

My daughter takes those milestones as suggestions, at best.

Ever since she was born, she’s been a little “late,” as her pediatrician likes to call it. Never a true problem requiring extra appointments, but something my husband and I have always had to keep an eye on.

The ironic part?

We tell the pediatrician the milestone she hasn’t hit yet, and the next day, our baby girl gets it in one.

Rolling, sitting up, and crawling all happened like that.

The current milestone of pulling herself up to stand? Not quite.

We’ve had the utmost trouble getting her to stand supported, never mind standing by herself. Every day, we work on it with her. A few minutes here, a few minutes there. There hasn’t been a day that’s gone by that we haven’t worked with her on it.

At her 12 month checkup, we were told that she has some muscle weakness in her legs and that if, come her 15 month checkup, she’s not standing, we’ll need to take her to physical therapy. It wasn’t the news we thought we would hear.

If I’m going to be honest, I stopped checking her against milestones months ago. My daughter has always done things her own way and gone at her own pace. I never once questioned it. Until now. This was the first time we were told that if she was late on a milestone, PT would be the next step.

Ironically, she has been trying to stand more after that appointment. But, she hasn’t been able to pull herself up to stand. Something her doctor was insistent that had to happen.

My fingers are crossed that she’ll do what she’s always done.

Take her milestones at her own pace, but achieve them, nevertheless.
